- μάρπτω
- μάρπτωGrammatical information: v.Meaning: `catch, seize, lay hold off, overtake' (Il.; cf. Ruijgh L'élém. ach. 166);Other forms: aor. μάρψαι (Il.), perf. μέμαρπεν etc. (Hes., A.R.),Compounds: Also with κατα-, συν-.Derivatives: μάρπτις m. `robber' (A. Supp. 826 [lyr.]; Schwyzer 271, 504 w. n. 3); κάμμαρψις μέτρον σιτικόν, τὸ ἡμιμέδιμνον. Αἰολεῖς H.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Analogically formed system without cognate outside Greek. Note the H.-glosses βράψαι συλλαβεῖν, ἀναλῶσαι, κρύψαι, θηρεῦσαι and βράπτειν ἐσθίειν, κρύπτειν, ἀφανίζειν, τῳ̃ στόματι ἕλκειν, η στενάζειν (with βρ- \< mr-); besides with deviating auslaut βρακεῖν συνιέναι, βράξαι συλλαβεῖν, δακεῖν, καταπιεῖν, which are compared with Skt. mr̥śáti `touch, take' (cf. s. v.). The variation κ : π is unexplained; on an improbable theory of assimilation (μ -- κ \> μ -- π) s. Schwyzer 302 and on βρακεῖν. Positing varying root-enlargements mer-ḱ- : mer-kʷ- (s. WP. 2, 283) does not help much. -- Older lit. in Bq. Cf. μαπέειν. - For the variation one thinks of Pre-Greek *mr(a)kʷ-, which became βραπ- or βρακ-, with developments differring from the IE labio-velars.Page in Frisk: 2,178
